How to Stay Cool During an Italian Summer

Italy in the summer is a lovely place to be, when flowers come into full bloom, fruits and vegetables are abundant, and the seaside destinations are abuzz with a boatload of activities and parties. However, summer is still summer, and during these months, temperatures can soar to a scorching 30 degrees centigrade or more. So yes, it can get VERY hot, it CAN get a bit uncomfortable, and you WILL sweat… but that doesn’t mean that you should let this get in the way of your enjoyment as you travel through Italy during your vacation there. Don’t worry, because we’re here to share with you some useful tips on how to stay cool and survive summer in Italy! Keep the alcoholic drinks few and far in between. While meals in Italy are normally served with either water or wine, try to opt for water instead, because alcohol dehydrates you and [...]

Video: Three Common Mistakes Tourists In Italy Make

As the saying goes, “when in Rome, do as the Romans do.” For the most part, this is true, and locals do appreciate it when visitors try to adapt to the native culture. But how exactly does one know how things are supposed to be done, especially when you don’t speak the language? Don’t worry though, because it’s nothing that a bit of research and preparation can’t fix. Whether it’s for something as simple as ordering a cup of coffee, or something as complicated as making bookings and reservations when you want to go out the next day during your Italy vacation, it’s always good to be informed and, in turn, efficient. This will not only save you from a load of hassle (and/or embarrassment!) in the long run, but it might also save you some precious time which you could be using to enjoy yourself, instead of trying to [...]

How to Tour Italy on a Budget

Even with the Euro crisis, the European currency is strong against the U.S. Dollar.  Here are some of Tour Italy Now’s best tips on how to tour Italy on a budget. Eating and drinking Picnics are a great way to practice some Italian, eat like the locals and relax in a pretty, green space. Find a local market, or alimentari – grocery store and stock up on cold meats and cheese sliced to order and fresh bread and local fruits and head to a park for your foraged feast. Pizza and gelato are both delicious and inexpensive.  A pizza is rarely more than 10 euros a person and even the smallest scoop of gelato is a pretty generous serving size.  During the day look for pizza a taglia, pizza by the slice or tramazzini filled triangle shaped sandwiches. At restaurants, look for the Menu de Giorno.  This is often a [...]

What to Pack for a Trip to Italy

Dragging a heaving suitcase around can really put a damper on your Italian vacation.  Here are some of our best tips on what to pack for a trip to Italy. Italy is one of the fashion capitols of the world. Italians are chic, pretty much all the time.  There is no running around all day in your yoga clothes here. Comfortable shoes.  Italians don’t wear flip-flops anywhere other than the beach. They don’t wear their running shoes for anything other than the gym.  They do wear sneakers, very stylish sneakers. The brand you will see most often is Hogan, a luxury brand associated with Todds. You will probably be doing a lot of walking on your trip to Italy so pack a comfortable pair of ballerinas or flat sandals. Sunscreen/Hat/Sunglasses.  The summer sun in Italy can be brutal.  Many of the most popular sites are outside. There will probably be [...]

Planning an Italy Trip Is Fun With Our Italy Vacation Checklist

We first highlighted our Insider Italy Vacation Checklist in a blog post last month, when we focused on the first three steps of planning an Italy trip: design and book your trip, make sure you’ve got your passport in order, either getting your first one or making sure your current one doesn’t expire before 90 days after your return trip and, last but not least, purchasing travel insurance. Now that those details are out of the way, it’s time to have fun with our next tips, Jumpstarting Your Italian Experience. To jumpstart your Italian experience, we suggest reading a few guidebooks. Italy is such a popular destination, many public libraries have large travel-book sections. You can also head to the bookstore, poke around the travel book sections and purchase what strikes your fancy. This way, you can get a sense of what you want to do on your trip, planning [...]

On Your Next Trip to Italy, Tips for Coffee Lovers

What does someone taking a trip to Italy need to know about coffee in Italy? First, there are multiple ways to imbibe the beverage, as this infographic from the charming website CharmingItaly.com attests. (For a larger version, click HERE.) Perhaps the most common misperception among people taking trips to Italy involves cappucino. To Italians, it’s first and foremost a breakfast drink. Some Italian servers refuse to serve cappucino to guests after dinner! Apart from that cautionary tip, we suggest that coffee lovers branch out and try as many Italian variations on the drink as possible while on your trip to Italy. The short version of the history of coffee in Italy is thus: Coffee arrived in Europe from Ethiopia via Istanbul, where it became popular as early as the 1500s, and then from Istanbul to Venice. This is where the first European coffeehouses sprouted up. Eventually there were scores of [...]

A Totally Cool Website About Italy

This past weekend I took note that Sofia Coppola (Lost In Translation), genius film director daughter of genius film director father Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather, all three of them), was marrying her long-time partner, and father of their two young children, Thomas Mars at the family’s palazzo in Bernaldo in Basilicata on the sleepy Ioanian coast of Italy. Intent on learning more about Bernalda, I clicked around and to my surprise and delight discovered what could possibly be the absolute coolest website devoted to Italy, at least in English: UrbanItaly.it. Launched earlier this year by Mikaela Bandini, a design/travel/scout, the site covers culture, food, hospitality, personalities. It’s something you should definitely check out if you are planning a trip to Italy or simply dreaming about taking a trip to Italy. This is a site that’s got its pulse on some of the neatest trends in Italy, from chefs to [...]
