Exploring Venice by Bike

venice by night

There is no better bucket list item then exploring Venice by bike. Modern Italy has always had a strong bicycling culture attached to its people. With so many bike trails laid out across the country, it’s hard to imagine a time when Italians didn’t rely on this eco-friendly mode of transportation to get around. And it’s no small wonder why people prefer to bike in Italy; with so many scenic bike routes, it is an absolute pleasure for many to travel along these paths while taking in the view.

Venice, while known more for its bridges, canals and gondolas, is actually a hidden sanctuary for bikers looking for a new experience outside the typical bike routes. The countryside surrounding the islands makes for an easily accessible trail that is both easy going and peaceful.

In particular, the islands of Lido and Pellestrina are ideal places that many bikers visit to get this unique biking experience. Typical routes are located between the lagoon and the Adriatic Sea, giving bikers a majestic view of the aquatic scenery, without losing sight of Venice in the background.

If you’re looking for specific bike trails that you can try, here are a few that we suggest trying:

Lido Bike Trail

This trail is roughly 40 kilometers long and features an easy and level travel route that’s perfect for beginners. It typically runs from the northern and southern ends of Lido and offers a great seaside view that’s unparalleled compared to other similar biking routes. Art lovers looking for prestigious artworks or nouveau architecture won’t be disappointed as well; the route runs through the island’s historic center, which features both things. And because of the seaside nature of the trail, it’s even possible to make a short pit stop and take a dip in the sea.

River Sile Trail

This route follows the Sile, which is considered as the longest resurgence river in Europe. Typical trails stretch from Quarto D’Altino to Treviso. As bikers follow the twists and turns of the river, they’ll be treated to a spectacular view of the Trevisan lowlands. The Venice lagoon is also one of the more popular stopovers during this trip, where people can take a break from their biking and admire the view.

Treporti Lagoon Trail

Those looking to explore the northern part of the lagoon won’t be disappointed, seeing as this trail offers an amazing view of Venetian flora and fauna along the way. The northern area of the lagoon is home to abundant waterfowl, including the flamboyant pink flamingo. The vast stretches of water along this route look spectacular in either the early morning or at sunset, where the light plays beautifully along the surface of the lagoon. There are also many natural marshes and sandbars that situated here, adding to the natural beauty of the place.

Bike and Boat Trail across Venice Lagoon

If you’re searching for a more unique biking experience, why not combine your trip with a boat ride that will take you from the shores of the lagoon to any of the various nearby islands. If exploring the main island just isn’t enough, then perhaps biking on some of the other islands will satisfy your craving. It’s possible to travel along the various bridges connecting the island of Burano. Or if nature is more your style, then why not bike across the vegetable gardens of St. Erasmus.

Regardless of which route you want to take, Venice is full of amazing bike trails that are just waiting to be explored. If you’re looking for something beyond the typical bike trails of Italy, then this is definitely a place worth checking out.
