Five Picture-Perfect Places for Wedding Proposals in Italy

Whenever we try to associate places with love and romance, one of the top locations that people will always mention would be the beautiful country of Italy. And who could blame them? With its wonderful climate, its rolling countryside, its gorgeous coastlines, and its vivid history and culture, it is the perfect backdrop for many romantic moments (and of course, there’s the fact that the famous Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck romantic comedy movie, Roman Holiday, featured the city of Rome).

With all of these factors combined, it comes as no surprise that a great number of visitors to Italy every year are couples who are there to get married, or are honeymooners. However, there are also those visitors who arrive with the intention of beginning their own romantic adventure, or in other words, they come to Italy to propose to the love of their life. Of course, with an event as special at this, it all boils down to the perfect timing and location. While we’ll leave you to decide on the timing, here are five picture-perfect places for wedding proposals in Italy in case any love birds out there are still searching for THE place to pop that all-important question!

Villa d’Este, Tivoli

Cities in Italy can get pretty crowded especially in the summer, and while that doesn’t detract from any romantic possibility (Roman Holiday, remember?), you may want a bit of quiet and privacy when presenting that engagement ring. If this is the case, then just take the short bus ride from Rome to get to nearby Tivoli where the enchanting Tivoli Gardens and Villa d’Este are located.

The villa itself is an impressive structure that is filled to the rafters with classical artwork, gorgeous frescoes, and intricate statues and carvings, quite literally from floor to ceiling. We’re hoping that being surrounded by all this beauty while touring the villa will set the mood for you and your loved one! If you prefer an outdoor setting, though, that won’t be a problem, either. Just step out onto the gardens itself and take a long, cozy walk among its hedges, pools, and fountains. In fact, just about anywhere in Tivoli Gardens would be a perfect spot to ask for anybody’s hand in marriage.

Bardini Gardens, Florence

If you happen to be in the Tuscany area instead, then chances are that you’ll be dropping by the city of Florence. Known for its role in the Renaissance and its artisan workshops (have we mentioned that there are a lot of master goldsmiths and jewelers over there who sell rings? Just saying…), the city itself is also steeped in the air of romance, especially in its many gardens when they are in bloom.

Located just across the river from the historic center of Florence, the Bardini Gardens is an enchanting location that should serve as a great spot for equally enchanting moments. There are many winding paths that lead to rose gardens, grottoes, baroque fountains, statues, mosaic walls, and even an orchard. It gets even better in the spring and summer, when the park becomes a profusion of various flowers as wisteria, irises, and hydrangeas come into bloom.

Terrace of Infinity, Ravello

Off to the Amalfi Coast for some sun, sand, and waves? Then you may want to bookmark a trip to the town of Ravello when planning your proposal. It’s a location that is a bit off the beaten path, as many tourists tend to linger in the main areas of Positano or Sorrento, so taking the trip up to Ravello can afford you a bit of quiet away from the crowds.

Once you get there, head for the Villa Cimbrone, an 11th century structure that is surrounded by gardens that are perfect for long walks. Within the gardens, one can discover temples, statues, cloisters, and grottoes which all look like they were taken out of a fairy tale. After your walk, then it’s time to head to the villa’s main feature, which is the the Terrazzo dell’lnfiniti, or Terrace of Infinity. The name of the terrace alone already evokes images of romance and happily ever afters, and it absolutely helps that the views from this spot are as majestic as its name. From here, you get a sweeping panorama of the Amalfi Coast that goes off into the horizon, and at sunset, it is nothing short of magical.

Spello, Umbria

If you and the love of your life enjoy the countryside more and happen to be traveling in central Italy, then swing by the quaint, quiet town of Spello in Umbria. It is an ancient town that is just downright charming, especially in the spring when its narrow, winding streets are a riot of blooms, color, and fragrance. This is all thanks to the flower pots and plants that the town’s citizens carefully tend to on their windowsills and balconies, thus creating a scene that looks straight out of a postcard.

If you get your timing right, you can also pay a visit during the annual local Infiorata flower festival which normally falls on the Feast of the Corpus Christi, or the ninth Sunday after Easter. On this day, the locals literally cover entire roads with flower petals, often arranging the petals of different-colored flowers to create stunning pictures.  After enjoying the festivities and possibly literally walking along flower-strewn paths, you can then enjoy the breathtaking views of the Umbrian plains from the town walls as you finally ask for your loved one’s hand in marriage.

Villa Doria Pamphili, Rome

Finally, we come full circle, and come right back to Rome. While there are many spots in the Eternal City that are also worth looking into such as the Spanish Steps or the Trevi Fountain, the crowds in these areas can get pretty big and the noise and activity they bring could possibly ruin an otherwise perfect moment (unless you’re both comfortable with this level of activity, of course).  If you’re looking for a quiet spot within the city itself, then we recommend Villa Doria Pamphili, which is the capital’s largest park.

With a history dating back to the 1600s, the park as it is today houses two villas, a theater, a casino, a chapel, numerous smaller gardens, fountains, statues, and even a lake with a cascade. It is a quiet area away from traffic, and the only crowd you would most likely run into would be a bunch of joggers, as the park is also a popular spot for fitness enthusiasts. As it is, you may want to bring over a picnic basket with some wine, find a spot under a fragrant tree, and enjoy a lazy day at the park with your lover as you find the perfect moment to ask the all-important question.

So there you have it! We’re hoping that with these suggestions, you will be able to create that perfect moment you’ve always wanted with your loved one.

Good luck! (And remember to call us for your honeymoon trip! :p)
