Concerts in Rome summer 2013

We have told you about opera and classical music festivals in Rome, Verona, Florence and Dolomites, but Italy is a top destination on the contemporary music tour circuit too.  Here are our picks for some of the best pop,rock and jazz in Italy this Summer 2013.

Rock in Roma

A short train ride from Roma Termini station is  Campanelle, a large, green concert venue and home to Rock in Roma.  This years performers include The Arctic Monkeys, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young and Sigur Ross.  IF the concert runs late, there are usually taxi’s available at the train station. New this year is a shuttle bus that can be booked in advance, hat goes to various points in Rome after the concert finishes.

Luglio Suono Bene

For the 11th year, Rome’s auditorium hosts Luglio Suono Bene (July sounds good) a month of concerts on an outside stage big names as diverse as the National and Diana Krall.  International acts like Asaf Avidan and Italian pianist Ludovico Einaudi  are just a few of the artist performing in Rome until the end of July.

Villa Adda

Set in a large park just north of the historic center an eclectic mix of acts perform outside all summer long.  This years theme is Roma Incontra il Mondo – Rome Meets the World. Highlights this year are Rome’s own Orchestra di Piazza Vittoria and the international pop group Kings of Convenience.

In Rome, the Feltrinelli bookstore at Largo Argentina has a ticket office for all of these venues.

Pistoia Blues Festival

Near Florence, in the town of Pistoia from the 3-7 of July is the Pistoia Blues Festival. Ben Harper, The Black Crowes, and Robery Cray are some of the many big names at this five day festival.

Lucca

For the month of July the very pretty walled city of Lucca hosts some of the world’s most popular contemporary artists.

Neil Young, The Killers, Mark Knopfler, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and 30 seconds to Mars are just a few of the big names performing this summer.

Siena

Siena and Stars takes place from July 01-August  02 in the stunning Piazza del Campo.  This festival has it all! From opera, ballet, theater, pop, and  jazz.  Siena and Stars has something for all tastes and price ranges.

Milan

Glen Hansard will be performing at the large and popular Carroponte venue. 

See the The Lumineers perform under the stars at the Circolo Magnolia

80‘s music fans will not want to miss Depeche Mode at the Stadium San Siro.

Umbria Jazz

The Umbrian hilltop town of Perugia is filled with Jazz of every kind from the 5-14 of July.

John Legend, Keith Jarrett, Brandford Marsalis will perform on the main stage and many other artists well known and local in smaller clubs and piazzas in the city.  Traveling with a musician? There are Jazz clinics run by the prestigious Berklee College of Music for the duration of the festival.

Torre Alfina Blues

In the tiny village of Torre Alfina (and a few shows in nearby towns) about 30 minutes from Orvieto is one of the best blues festivals in Italy. The festival is happening from 20-22 July and 11-12 August.
