italy-travel-guide-amalfi-coast-positano-view Introduction

If you’re ever traveling to the Amalfi Coast area of Italy, make sure to drop by the lovely town of Positano. It is located on a hill face with roads and avenues that lazily wind down to the waters of the Amalfi Coast below, making it a particularly picturesque and charming location, italy-travel-guide-amalfi-coast-positano-streetsespecially in the summer months. It is a popular tourist destination due to its relaxed atmosphere, and its wonderful Mediterranean climates. However, due to its popularity, keep in mind that this town tends to be full of tourists during the high season, so if you wish to avoid the crowds, it may be best to visit Positano during a different season.

Originally a part of the Amalfi Republic, it became a prosperous port city during the Renaissance era. Over the centuries, however, it was transformed into a small fishing village before finally seeing a revival in more recent times as a tourist hotspot. Though a small town, Positano is a perfect location for those who wish to just kick back, relax, and let the day lazily go by, all while sipping on an ice-cold glass of the local limoncello.

On top of being a summer destination, Positano is also a popular destination for artists all around as it hosts the yearly Cartoons at the Bay Festival where the prestigious Pulcinella award for animation is presented.

What to See

Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta

Other than the town itself, Positano’s main attraction would be the Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta. It is located in the town’s center, and is a italy-travel-guide-amalfi-coast-positano-santa-maria-assuntabeautiful church whose interiors are adorned in stucco, majolica tiles, and gold, and boasts of a gorgeous dome as well. The Beaches

If you’re heading to a seaside location, then make sure to check out the beach! Visitors can relax at either the Spiaggia Grande, which is the main activity area of the town, or at the quieter Fornillo Beach.

Tips and Advice

  • Positano can be visited via various means, the more scenic of which would be by bus. Take note, though, that during the summer, these buses can be particularly crowded, so plan and pack accordingly. You can also take a ferry from Naples, and while slightly pricier than the bus, it’s quicker, and is also a great way to get a good look at this charming town as you approach.
  • The area is well-known for its lemons, so be sure to sample the various lemon products you can find here! In fact, grab a bottle of limoncello to take back with you, too!
