Weather in Italy

Before you plan your next trip to Italy, you should know beforehand what the weather will be like when you get there. While Italy’s climate is generally Mediterranean, the country has a few different regions where weather can be different from the other areas. The weather in the country varies according to region, with those up north usually being cooler than the regions to the south. Duomo in Florence with the Skies in the Background Showing Mild Weather Knowing what the weather is in the part of Italy you are planning on visiting will help you decide when it is the best time to go on your trip. The country has 3 general climate types, dependent on the area. There is the mild continental, which is found in the Po Valley area, cold in the Alpine area, and Mediterranean in the coastal areas to the south. For the most part, the country enjoys hot and sunny months between July and August, but the parts of the country near the Alps will often experience afternoon thunderstorms during this time of the year. So if you are heading to the northern part of Italy near this mountainous area, be sure to be ready for downpours. The best time to enjoy Italy’s climate is from April through June and mid-September through October, when the temperatures during the day are about 70 degrees. Summer in Italy can be quite hot (especially in Venice, where the air doesn’t seem to move) and crowded, but if that’s the only time you can visit, the weather should not deter you.   Rainy Day in Venice Italy If it gets too warm for your taste, you may just want to do as the Romans do and head for the beach. Winters in the north can be very cold – especially near the Alps – but visitors may experience balmy days in Naples and Sicily even near Christmas. It rarely snows south of Rome, except for some locations in the mountains. If your journey takes you to the mountains at any time of the year, be sure to bring warmer clothing for the evenings when it can be damp and chilly. Want to avoid the crowds on the famed Amalfi Coast? Go during May or early June. Want to experience the real Venice in real Italy weather? Go during the winter, but expect massive crowds during Carnevale. Weather-wise, there really is no wrong time to experience Italy and repeat visitors like to vary the time of the year they travel here. Just make sure that when you do travel to Italy you are ready for whatever comes your way, so pack some warm clothing for those chilly nights if you are going up north, have your swimsuit ready for those warm sunny days down south, and have your umbrellas ready for the occasional shower and thunderstorm, which can happen anywhere and at any time in Italy. Just remember, no matter what the weather, always enjoy and have the time of your life in Italy. Whether you are on an escorted tour of Italy or a customized tour of the country, the trip itself will always provide memories that last a lifetime, regardless of the weather when you go there.
