Abruzzo

Major Cities:

L'Aquila
Abruzzo, Italy boasts the largest area (30 percent of the Abruzzo region) of protected land with its many wildlife sanctuaries and preserved parks such as Parco Nationale d'Abruzzo which is perfect for hiking and horseback riding. Also for the outdoor enthusiasts are the Appenine Mpuntain range, the largest mountains in central Italy, where downhill and cross-country skiing are possible. L'Aquila, the Abruzzo region capital 78 miles Northeast of Rome, holds the Museo Nationale dell'Abruzzo, which is housed in a 16th century fortress that looks out over the city and hosts traveling exhibitions and permanent installations as well. The Abruzzo region is known for its medieval villages, some much better preserved than others, scattered throughout the mountains and valleys. The east section of Abruzzo borders on the Adriatic Sea and seaside cities such as Pescara are popular destinations for Italian vacationers in need of rest and relaxation. In the south of the Abruzzo region, tiny villages built into mountainsides and nestled within valleys surrounded by vineyards of grapes and olives are typical of the land. Sulmona, the largest town in the area, is famous throughout Italy for its confezioni, sugared almond candies. Abruzese cuisine consists, to name some staples, of lamb, pork, hearty soups, light tomato sauces and homemade pasta, and anything that makes use of local resources. Whereas Abruzzo, Italy is far from a luxurious or well known travel destination, the food, the landscape and the people of this region who cling to their old traditions, both pagan and Catholic, make Abruzzo an intriguing destination for those interested in visiting a region hidden from most foreign tourists.
