Molise

Major Cities:

Campobasso
Molise Italy is a small and undiscovered region where tradition, intricate craftsmanship, and hospitality are still points of pride for its inhabitants. A relatively new region, only having split from the Abruzzo region to its north in 1965, its underdevelopment has preserved the inspiring mountainous landscape. Campobasso is the regional capital and a central point from which travel throughout the region is easiest. Molise Italy is a region where remains of antiquity are prevalent due to the lack of development of the mountainous countryside. Isernia, a town set amidst the ridge of a mountain, holds the Museo Nationale, which features regional archeological finds dating back to the Roman era and remains of animals such as elephant and rhinoceros species from 700,000 years ago. The town of Pietrabbondante features a massive Hellenistic theater complex 3,000 feet up in the mountains. Saepinum is the most popular site for those interested in archeology, likened to Pompeii in it s intrigue and quality of preservation yet without the masses of tourists. An excavated ancient Roman city, Saepinum is located by the hillside village of Sepino. For those interested in taking advantage of the preserved landscape, Pesche, 2 miles northeast of Isneria is a village somewhat miraculously built into the steep slope of a mountain. It is the perfect place to explore for those interested in hiking, for the Riserva Naturale di Pesche above the village is a breathtaking natural sanctuary where one can spot orchids among the oak trees in the spring and listen to the sweet songs of native birds. Agnone is also a well known town in Molise Italy for its craftsmanship of bells, which has been a successful production enterprise since medieval times. Molise Italy is also famous for its polenta and flavorful delicious sheep’s and cow’s-milk cheeses. Small and intimate, Molise Italy is worth exploring for those not afraid to stray from the crowds.
