Major Cities:

Trento
Bolzano
Garda

Once part of Austria-Hungary, the region of Trentino-Alto-Adige, also known as South Tyrol, sits in the northernmost region of Italy and includes two different provinces – Trento and Bolzano-Bozen. Bordered by both Austria and Switzerland (about a third of the population are native German speakers), Trentino-Alto-Adige spreads over about 5,200 square miles and boasts a total population of just over a million inhabitants. Much of the land is mountainous or covered with dense forests and the climate varies depending on the altitude.

The soil in this part of the country is very fertile, producing excellent grapes and other fruits, including a variety of apples. The Trentino-Alto-Adige region is also a major producer of dairy products, and the forests lend themselves to the presence of a prolific timber industry including several paper mills. The area is also known for chemical and metals production. Tourism is an important part of the economy as well, and the region is said to have the highest concentration of hotels in Italy.

Visitors will find two very distinct characters in this portion of the country. Bolzano-Bozen is decidedly German, boasting few Italian speakers. Many of the South Tyroleans who live here spend their time enjoying winter sports, in particular skiing, luge, figure skating, ice hockey and more.

On the other hand, Trento is Italian to the core and is Northern Italy’s major education, scientific, and financial center. Quite a vibrant city, Trento is kind of off the beaten track for tourists but worth inclusion on any tour of Italy, particularly the northern portion. While its churches aren’t quite as magnificent as those in the larger cities, there are many that are quite notable including the town’s Romanesque-Gothic Duomo and the Church of Sant’Apolllinare. There are also several palazzi and some interesting examples of Modernist architecture as well, including the city’s train station and post office.
