Enjoying Italian Food in Bologna, a.k.a. “La Grassa”

pasta bolognese
It’s virtually impossible not to find delicious Italian food in Italy. But one city where the food is particularly wonderful, never mind famous around the world, is Bologna. Some of Italy’s best known foods, from mortadella — yes, the word “baloney” is a variation on Bologna! — to Bolognese sauce, are from Bologna. Bologna is a medieval city that is home to one of the world’s oldest universities and, in a surprise to many visitors, its own canal system and a leaning tower, too. Another distinctive feature of its arcades, or portici, arched walkways throughout the city. Two other staples of Italian food, Parmesan cheese and balsamic vinegar, come from the outskirts of Bologna, in the Emilia-Romagna region.

We wanted to share this recent article from the newspaper the Guardian of 10 budget restaurants in Bologna. This is just the sort of article you should bookmark in the event that you take one of Tour Italy Now’s tours with Bologna on the itinerary, like the Dolce Vita Tour and the Classic Italy tour. The Guardian’s “10 best” list of budget eats in Bologna, in addition to highlighting great eateries with great Italian food, showcases some of Bologna’s neighborhoods, from the student quarter to the historic town center with its stunning Piazza Maggiore.

As for the Italian food, the pizza is pretty wonderful in Bologna! Another popular dish is tortellini in brodo, tortellini in broth. Of the list in the article, I’m trying to decide which place I’d try first if I were lucky enough to be back in Bologna. (I visited Bologna several years ago for the first time, and was absolutely blown away by its charm, food, architecture and style!) I’ve been to La Baita Formaggi and would absolutely return. I’m also pretty certain I ordered something at the le Stanze!

If you’ve been to Bologna, tell us about your restaurant finds! If not, tell us what looks appealing, either from the list on the article (we cannot post the article due to copyright considerations) or from personal experience and word-of-mouth.
