Italy is known for some of the oldest and best wines in the world. It’s no wonder why locals and tourists alike travel the country to get a taste of its amazing local wines. Wine lovers in particular will definitely not be disappointed by going to any of the various regions that produce their world-class wine.

Below is a list of some of Italy’s famous wine country regions.

Tuscany

Considered as one of the most popular regions for fine wine in the country, Tuscany is located south of the Apennine Mounain in Central Italy. The region is known for several varieties of wine such as the Chianti and Sangiovese wines, as well as the Montepulicano and Brunello varietals. Siena is part of the region and includes some of Tuscany’s largest vineyards. Some of these include Casa Vinicola L. Cecchi, Castello Banfi, and Biondi-Santi.

Montefalco

A close neighbor of Tuscany, Montefalco is also well-known for its elegant Italian reds. While the region doesn’t get a lot of attention outside of Italy, they still make outstanding red wines that are a local favorite. However, the Sagratino wine of Montefalco has slowly gained a growing following throughout the years and is now being served in many Michelin-starred restaurants throughout the world.

Veneto

The flatlands of Veneto are also famous for making some of the best wine in the country. When it comes to red wines, Valpolicella, Bardalino, Soave, and Amarone della Valpolicella are considered as some of the world’s best red wines. Another type of wine that the region is famous for is Prosecco, a sparkling wine which is Italy’s equivalent for Champagne. Many tourists visit Veneto just to sample the amazing wine that they have to offer.

Emilia-Romagna

A vast area that is located along the Po River valley, the region is perhaps best known for its Lambrusco wine, a red wine that’s characterized for its light and zesty flavor. Its grapes are primarily grown on the hillsides of Modena and Reggio Emilia. The region includes the city of Bologna, which is a great place for tourists to stay since it a great view of the Adriatic Coast.

Puglia

While the region is mostly known for its production of olive oil, it is also the home of some of the most underrated wines in the country. The southern region of Puglia is packed with vineyards that grow the indigenous Negroamaro grapes, soft and round fruits that can be easily turned into amazing red Primitivo wine.

Located in the surrounding countryside of Rome itself, Lazio is the birthplace of its signature wine, Frascati – a delicate white wine that has a citrusy flavor and goes well with any light summer dishes.
