Great news for all our readers! To kick off 2015, Tour Italy Now’s very own Founder and President, Dominic Siano, will be speaking at the Insider’s Italy panel during one of this year’s biggest travel events, the New York Times Travel Show 2015! The New York Times Travel Show is an annual three-day event that will be held from Friday, January 23, 2015, thru Sunday, January 25, 2015, at the Jacob Javits Center in New York. This event puts the country’s top travel experts and professionals all under one roof. The exhibition will feature exciting and highly-educational talks, seminars, and discussions about travel, as well as trade pavilions, international culinary demonstrations, and entertaining cultural performances. Last year, the event had an attendance of more than 23,000 visitors, and about 250 speakers in 60 panels were featured. As the title of this article reads, the city of Rome in Italy has recently implemented a new Tourist Accommodation Tax (also known as “tassa di soggiorno” in Italian, and “bed tax”, “guest tax”, or “hotel tax” in English) as of September 1, 2014. This is a fascinating story that spans centuries and continents. The famous Aphrodite statue is now on display in Aidone, Sicily, after a decades-long odyssey involving the J. Paul Getty Museum of Los Angeles and Italian prosecutors. The statue of Aphrodite, the ancient goddess of love, was taken from the archeology-rich region of Morgantina, near Enna, 30 years ago, in an illegal excavation, acquired by the Getty and, after a criminal investigation, repatriated to Italy in the spring of 2012. Experts now believe the returned statue represents the goddess Persephone or her mother, Demeter, who were worshipped in the ancient city, Morgantina. Persephone and Hades are closely associated in Greek mythology.
