With spring blooming across Italy, there is no better time to enjoy a relaxing picnic with both family and friends. There are many beautiful parks and gardens in Italy that are perfect for having a picnic. Coupled with all the tasty treats Italian cuisine has to offer, it’s no wonder why local Romans and tourists alike take the time to go outdoors and bask in the springtime air.

There are many hidden parks, gardens and hilltops across the country that families, travelers and romantic couples can choose to have a picnic. It’s certainly a great way to unwind after a day of sightseeing and traveling from place to place. Here is a short list of some of the best picnic spots in Italy.

Villa Borghese (Rome)

Villa Borghese is considered the third largest park in Rome. Preserved and maintained since the nineteenth century, this huge landscape garden was made for Scipione Borghese, an Italian cardinal and lover of the arts. The view from the southern part of the park is simply breathtaking, as you have a beautiful view of Rome from this point. The visitors can take a leisurely stroll, and can even rent a small rowboat, around the pond in the center of the park, the Giardino del Lago.

Monte Gianicolo (Rome)

Nuns In RomeLocated on Janiculum Hill, this park provides an excellent view of the rolling landscape that make up the famous Seven Hills around Rome. It’s a great place to get away from the bustling city center and just enjoy a quiet moment as you view the glorious urban skyline of the Eternal City. This view becomes even more beautiful during the sunset, when the entire city is colored in subdued hues of pink and orange.

Villa Doria Pamphili (Rome)

Sufficed to say, Rome has many places that make ideal picnic spots. Villa Doria Pamphili is the largest public park in Rome and offers visitors a vast expanse of greenery and well-maintained lawns to take a walk in. It is located in the Monteverde quarter of the city and sits just outside the Porta San Pancrazio, one of the southern gates of Rome. It has a total area of 1.8 kilometers and makes an ideal place for bird watching and jogging. Numerous visitors frequent the park, especially during the weekends.

Piazza Santa Maria Novella (Florence)

If you want to have a picnic in front of one of the great Basilicas in Florence, then the Piazza Santa Maria Novella is the most ideal location. The church found in this famous square was built around the oratory of Santa Maria delle Vigne in the 9th century. Both the church and its cloister were designed by friars from the Dominican Order and include artwork from some of the country’s most famous artists at the time. Beautiful frescos made by Filippino Lippi, as well as the bronze crucifix made by Giambologna can be seen here.

Sant’Elena Gardens (Venice)

The gardens are just a short hop away from the famous San Marco square and are an ideal place to have a picnic while giving you a good view of the lagoon. Located on Sant’Elena island, picnic goers can cool their heels at the Parco delle Rimembranze. Other historical places of note in the area include the Church of Sant’Elena, which has been around since the 12th century.
