How to Buy a Great Venetian Mask in Italy!

venetian mask collection

I’m Josh, founder of VIVO Masks. We specialize in beautiful, handcrafted masquerade masks made in Italy, and want to discuss how to buy a venetian mask in Italy.

I’m here because many people may wonder what the difference is between an authentic venetian mask versus an imitation mask that you can find at most local party stores in the months leading up to Halloween and Mardi Gras. Here’s what to look for to help you distinguish between imitation and authentic masks, whether you’re shopping at home or are lucky enough to get to go to Italy!

Uniqueness – Imitation masks are made in factories hundreds at a time. One mask will look exactly the same as the next. The workers who create these masks often times have little to no knowledge of the history of venetian masks and therefore is very unlikely to look like a real venetian mask. Authentic venetian masks are hand-crafted, meaning that they will contain slight variations for specific styles. Each is unique and made with the generations-old methods.

Quality – Imitation masks are made as inexpensively and quickly as possible. This affects the final look mask as trimming, beads, rhinestones are often added haphazardly so glue may be visible, pieces or glitter may be falling off, etc. Authentic masks are the pride of the craftsmen who make them. The time spent hand painting and detailing masks is considered a labor of love.

Material – Imitation masks are often made of inexpensive materials such as plastic, glitter, silk flowers, etc. Authentic masks are made from paper mache typically, and can be made with beautiful adornments from velvet to leather, Swarovski rhinestones to gold leaf. Because the masks are each handcrafted and adorned by an artisans the variety of materials used is endless.

Certificate – Authentic masks often come with a certificate of authenticity. This is often attached to the ribbon of the mask and includes information about the manufacturer and/or artists.

The detailing of this mask is unparalleled. It features a one of a kind custom fitting that uses 16th century molding techniques. It contains five 1 carat Canadian conflict free diamonds and two 4 carat round cut diamonds. The crown in composed of 200g of 24 carat gold, and 100g Platinum sun pieces that are adorned with 250g of 18 carat gold finishing. The mask itself is hand painted and signed by three world renowned venetian artists. This is truly a mask made for a king!
