Day 5 – Tuesday: Sorrento – Amalfi (Breakfast)

The splendor of the Amalfi Coast is legendary, with its spectacular panoramas inspiring writers, artists, and musicians over the centuries. Considered one of Italy’s most scenic locales and lauded by the UNESCO as “an outstanding example of a Mediterranean landscape, with exceptional cultural and natural scenic values”, this is one part of Italy you won’t want to miss. You will see delicate fishing villages hugging the hillsides of this 50-kilometer long southern coastline, seemingly defying the forces of gravity.

The first stop in this picturesque stretch of shoreline is the town of Amalfi, where you will be given the chance to explore the medieval part of the city. Here is where you will find the magnificent Dome of St. Andrew and other prehistoric buildings that date back to when Amalfi was one of the maritime powers in the Mediterranean Sea.

Later in the day, you will go down to Ravello, which is said to be one of the most romantic and most gorgeous small towns in southern Italy. Suspended on demanding, terraced slopes, Ravello was described by French novelist André Gide regarded the town as one that “was closer to the sky than the sea.” Covered with lush gardens as well as quiet and sleepy roads, walking around this unforgettable town will give you haunting views of the azure coast below. After your exploration, return to the hotel and spend the night in Sorrento.

Day 6 – Wednesday: Sorrento (Breakfast)

This is another day that you will be given the chance to explore another part of Italy at your leisure. After breakfast at your hotel, you can go around town and check out the historical sites in the area, or you can choose to spend the day at the beach.

OPTIONAL TOUR ($120 per person): Day trip to Capri with regular group

Day 7 – Thursday: Sorrento – Matera – Martina Franca (Breakfast)

After breakfast you will be taken from Sorrento to Martina Franca in the heart of Puglia.

On the way to the southeastern tip of Italy, you will stop by Matera, which is a city on top of a rocky outcrop. You will be given time to explore the city. This ancient city gives off an aura that makes you think that is has existed forever. It is the third oldest city in the world, after Aleppo and Jericho, with over 10,000 years of history.

From the natural caves that were the products of rain and erosion, to the man-made caves in the same area, you will learn just how easy it was to shape the limestone material of the Sassi rock to create the complex of cave dwellings that is carved into the mountainside. Matera is another UNESCO World Heritage Site due to the most beautiful churches here like the Duomo di Matera, San Pietro Caveoso, and San Pietro Barisano. Take a walk through the traffic-free squares, and the beautiful streets brimming with locals. You can also explore some of the most picturesque alleys in the country here.

After your exploration of Matera, you will then be taken to Martina Franca, which is further to the east, to spend the night there.

Day 8: Friday – Martina Franca – Ostuni – Lecce (Breakfast)

After breakfast, you will be driven first to Ostuni & later on to Lecce by your driver, both of which are located along the southeastern coast of the country, facing the Adriatic Sea.

Ostuni is a city that enjoys its popularity as a “White Town” due to the whitewashed houses located in its historic center. These are traditional homes that have been kept by locals the way they are for centuries. This commune, which is also called la Citta Bianca, also has ancient churches and other historical buildings that are worth visiting. These include the 15th Century Romanesque-Gothic Cathedral, Aragonese walls, and two ancient town gates, Porta Nova and Porta San Demetrio.

Your next destination is the city of Lecce. Sometimes referred to as “the Florence of the South,” Lecce has strong Messapian roots. These are an ancient and mysterious people that lived in this area long before the Romans ever did. This city captivates visitors with its magnificent baroque architecture, which is evident in the palaces and the many churches are found within the city’s three ancient gates: Porta Rudiae, Porta San Biagio and Porta Napoli.

At the end of the day, you will be taken back to Martina Franca where you will spend the night.

Day 9: Saturday – Martina Franca – Alberobello – Locorotondo (Breakfast & Lunch)

Today you will be transferred to the charming village of Gioia del Colle, which is a town in Bari, Puglia. Here, you will meet a local mamma who will introduce you to the wonders of local cuisine. This begins with a walk along the narrow streets of the village where you will mix with locals and buy genuine ingredients while listening to old stories about the place.

Next, you will walk till you reach a charming old house where the local mamma will teach you how to prepare the famous pasta “orecchiette” (from Italian orecchia, meaning ‘ear’). After this quick cooking lesson, you will then get to enjoy a great and authentic “Pugliese” lunch.

Next, you will be taken to Alberobello and Locorotondo where you can explore the areas at your leisure. Alberobello is one place you should not miss visiting, with its traditional dome shaped buildings called Trulli, which is a spin-off of the Greek word “tholos” which means dome. It is another UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Locorotondo, which is very close to Alberobello, is also lauded as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. The name itself lets you know that the town has a unique circular shape, with the name meaning “round place.” This makes the town itself the main tourist sight. Here you can relax and while away the time, wandering, taking photographs, and sitting at cafe tables sipping coffee or the local wine.

The historic part of town, which is the centro storico, is circular and perched on top of a hill. It’s a whitewashed maze of small lanes lined with historic buildings, some of which are humble and faded, while others have a rather grand baroque look with archways and fine architectural details.

At the end of the day, you will be taken back to your hotel in Martina Franca where you will spend the night.

Day 10: Friday – Martina Franca – (Breakfast)

This is the last day of the tour and will begin with breakfast at the hotel. You will meet the driver to make your way to Bari’s airport or train station.
